this mix is exclusively made up from the records i found whilst rummaging through the bargain creates at kristina records in dalston yesterday, for those of you that are not familiar with record store day, its the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. stores have live in-store performances and they put out a huge selection of reduced records, which are snapped up by music geeks like me :) kristina records http://kristinarecords.com/ has such a great selection of house music, it was my first choice store to visit and i wasn’t disappointed! I was like a kid at a candy store, i spent about £20 and got a shit load of records some of which where so good i just had to make a mix straight away!

this is the first upload of my random weekend mix sessions at my flat, diving into the crate in an effort to play some of my records that are usually overlooked, also to find some nice combinations. since i have no fancy gear, i just stick a cable straight out of my mixer into the laptop, so the sound quality is what it is, also i haven't mixed it down, so the bass and volume fluctuates slightly, but as a whole its not too bad. feedback is always appreciated.

underhill festival mix

hello, i am back again after another long hiatus, i have finally admitted defeat, i will now only upload new mixes when i have them, no more 'monthly' updates, as it just doesn't seem to happen, unless i become unemployed and have the time on my hands.

its a shame though, as there is so much music i listen too, everyday, i would love to make a new mix on a daily bases, techno, house, garage, alternative, fuck it even classical and pure ambient mixes would be lush, but i haven't got the hours...

i will give you a little treat though, a mix that has been in the making for nearly a year. i started buying vinyl about 2 years ago and now i have a collection that i am quite proud of, i don't by many LP's manly 12" singles or EP's, the genres span a good amount of the electronic spectrum, focusing on detroit, deep and funky house, techno, minimal, garage, post dubstep and drum and base. i love to mix the genres up and try to include at least a couple in each of my mixes, i have a short attention span and find my self drifting from room to room in most clubs if i don't hear enough variety. so this mix started when i really got into records, i made a very short list of some of my favorite records and this mix is the product of that list.

my friend gave me my first opportunity this summer to DJ at a festival, and what better place to unveil the tracks that i love and the music that inspires me than at small festival in a remote field full of enthusiasts.

january 2011 mix

OK, first things first, i have definitely been neglecting blog duties once again, but it seems to be around the time of summer that things start to trail off, i get busy, and the blog takes a back seat, lets see if i can find a balance in 2011, less nights out and more nights in, spending time on mixes. secondly, i need some feedback guys, i put these mixes together and no one says shit... like 'good mix', 'i like that tune' or 'this is rubbish', well if your gonna say that then maybe you should keep it to yourself ;) so if you dig the mix and download it then say a few words...

i hope everyone had a good new years, mine was very quite this year, just me and my girl :) the year before was crazy enough for 3-4 years i think.

right lets get down to the music, since that's what y'all are here for anyways. last year was MEGA for young producers, david kennedy aka ramadanman/pearson sound, my producer of the year, this boy was BUSY, 12's, ep's, his record label; Hessle Audio, collaborations and remixes with midland and appleblim, i have never seen so much productivity from one man... others include joy (bring back garage) orbison, space dimension controller (who i will drop into a mix next month), pariah (so fresh on the scene he counts burial as an inspiration to start producing), julio bashmore (also mighty fine rifleman), CFCF, james (lets hope stays relatively underground-ish) blake, jacques greene, braiden (rinse fm), XxXy and many, many, many more...

also last year dubstep seemed to drift off towards the end and make way for more house beats, RnB and future garage (as some have come to call it), the dubstep thing has seemed to get old quick, good timing too as it seems its going to go mainstream this year...

so this mix is really a reflection of that change as you will spot a few names in the tracklisting that i have included in previous mixes, this time round however you will notice little similarity in there sound. its not uncommon for an artist to change there sound, but to do it so rapidly, within the first year or so of producing, it seems as they are anti-genre, like they don't want to be pigeonholed or placed in a certain category, which i can totally relate to, especially in today's 'throw away' society, where we get bored of something before it has a chance to develop properly... a product of the download generation...

so this mix has alot of 90's influence, the house beats, the occasional 808 synth, the female vocals and some garage dirt :)

may 2010 mix: part two

back to back mixes comin' at ya like a beam, like a ray, like a buzzard! this time round i have raided my hard drive for something different, some good old lo-fi, hi distortion, full on feel good indie rock. its been i while since i listened to some of this stuff and the other day i was thinking just how good all this music used to make me feel :)

the vancouver boys, japandroids kick this mix off with a belter from there first full LP, 'post nothing', i was lucky enough to catch these boys playing on my doorstep, up in highbury a couple of weeks ago and they tore the roof off, impressive for a band consisting of a just 2 people.

ash pick up the distortion from where the canadians left off in true 94 fashion, these dudes where only teens when they released there first LP 'trailer', for me its their most raw and awesome offering to date.

back over the pond again for some classic everclear, a band that brings back a lot of memories for me circa 1998-9, sadly they kinda turned cheesy in later years to come...

the pixies really need no introduction, they just own!

idlewild may not be a familiar name to those of you outside the UK, but these scottish boys where hot stuff back in the mid to late 90's and their first couple of albums where played to death by me in college and uni.

the same goes for weezer's first two albums 'blue' and 'pinkerton', sadly though, they too lost their edge over time, but this track is proof that they fucking ruled back in the day!

the smashing pumpkins where (or should i say are?) a classic grunge band from the early nineties, 'tomorrow' is taken from there second album 'siamise dream' which came out in 93 or something, but it wasn't until my mate lent me his copy (on a permanent basis) back in 98 that i realized what had been missing in my life, this album is solid gold!

the swedes take the reins next, i heard these guys for the first time on the soundtrack to a movie called 'spun' that, coincidentally, billy corgan (frontman of the smashing pumkins) wrote half of the songs for. i love this song, it makes me loose all hope but feel great at the same time...

wavvves are a crazy bunch of guys from san diego, i recently heard that they used to get really fucked up before going onstage, leading to a classic meltdown at the 2009 primavera sound festival in barcelona, when the bands singer broke down and had to stop playing... carrrazzzzy.

anyway that is my selection and here they all are in one nice little mix, enjoy:

may 2010 mix: part one

its been a while (again) since my last post, been busy and have neglected blog responsibilities, so i will be uploading two mixes this month, well we are now technically in june, but i made these mixes in may and just finished tweaking them so this is may mix part one.

since i touched on dubstep in february i thought i would do an entire dubstep mix, short and sweet with some of my favorites on the scene right now, obviously joy orbison is going to be in there, i should mention the ace label 'hot flush' which, according to various media is 'untouchable', i would have to agree. scuba (the boss of hotflush) has been producing amazing music for some time now, slightly underrated i think as he has no definitive track, no classic dance floor filler, but this can sometimes be a good thing, not a one hit wonder. ramadanman, who was in my last mix has been a very busy boy, releasing tracks on a multitude of record labels including the excellent 'hemlock records' on which he recently released the glut/tempest 12", a hot piece of vinyl. F is a dutch producer (need i say more...) a real gem, love his work, he has a great style, slightly leaning more towards techno with the great two step baselines. INSTRA:MENTAL throw down a sweet remix of mount kimbie's 'at least', i have been following both of these duo outfits for quite a while now, INSTRA:MENTAL do a lot of collaborations with dubstep and d&B producers and have always created a unique sound that merges the two genres seamlessly. i end the mix with a burial classic, if you have never heard of burial before and you like dubstep, you really should stop reading this and head straight over to your local record shop and pick up both of his albums, i couldn't recommend them enough.

anyway i think that gives you a brief introduction to the artists, so now the substance:

february 2010 mix

this month i dedicate to taurine, coffee, tea, toast and nando's, and anything else that kept me running up until the end. i think i have just worked the hardest 4 weeks of my life, 3 days off in february, bringing the grand total to 7 days off this year. if you are wondering what i do for a living... i make special effects in movies and have just finished up on clash of the titans, which should be out in may sometime...

februarys mix comes straight from my headphones at work, i just looked at my most recently played list and selected a few key tracks, it is evident no-doubt that i have been listening to quite a bit of dub and electro, anything to keep me going into the early hours.

so more about the music... well my man of the moment is joy orbison, a 22 year old from croydon, south london. he has produced some absolute stonking tracks over the past year and has been consistent with remixes and live shows, a great mix to look out for is 'four tet - love cry (joy orbison mix)' amazing track, i should have stuck it in this mix really but i think there is already a little to much joy. others guys that are wowing me at present are zomby (heard he is a bit of a let down, not showing up for live shows but his tunes are genius), floating points and martyn, the latter has been a fav of mine for a while, ever since my mate introduced me to him last summer. martyn, coincidently, has just mixed the latest fabric offering 'fabric 50' and i recommend checking it out for some fresher than fresh beats.

happy new year! best wishes for 2010, hope your all not still hanging from the nights festivities ;) the free transport in london made for an interesting night in the city, dodging all the piles of sick kept me on my toes (literally)... but fun was had by all and sticking to house parties was a good idea, slightly lighter on the wallet, more money for a cheeky mc attack in the morning :D

its already looking like a good year for music with new album releases coming up from Cold War Kids, Eels and Los Campesinos in january and the mighty yeasayer in february :) on the live front we have why?, grizzly bear, pheonix and yeasayer coming to london over the next three months!

so i have compiled only a few songs, its quality over quantity, to reflect on some of the great music that we had back in 2009 and to set the bar for 2010!

wow, its been a while since i uploaded any mixes to this blog, its been a busy summer but that's no excuse, i started this blog in an effort to upload a new mix every month, but i obviously have a problem with commitment...

anyway, i thought it would be quite nice and a little different, looking back over my last few posts, to upload some good old indie alternative music, and give the idm, electro, minimal, house scene a little break. this mix, i say mix, its more of a play list than a mix, is dedicated to some of my favorite US bands, the national, yeasayer, tv on the radio, cat power and tonnes more, these are some of the best bands i have ever had the privilege of listening to whilst staring out of the windows of buses, walking the dark streets of london on the way home, or generally just drifting in and out of sleep on a sunday afternoon thinking too much about nothing...

i hope you like my selection, i carefully picked out some of the songs that have soundtracked my life over the last few years, music just too good to ignore.

june 2009 mix

over the past month i have been listening to a-LOT of minimal tech, this is partially inspired by a small group of individuals that i have met through similar taste in music and have had the pleasure of attending some excellent gigs with. its great when you discover great clubs on your door step that you didn't even know existed. for me highlights include corsica studios in south london and cable at london bridge, both of which boast sound systems that rival that of fabric.

since i am on a bit of a minimal mission, i have thrown in some progressive house beats to stir things up a bit.

looking back over the past few posts, i can see a pattern emerging. some regular appearances by james holden and nathan fake (can't get enough of these boys), newcomers to this blog take the form of dead mau5 (the canadian genius and beatport god) and perfect stringer (aka yuli fershtat), both of whom provide the progressive beats to this mix. towards the end i hit the kompakt discography for all its worth, a lable full of little delights :)

may 2009 mix

recently i have been listening to some of the artists that caught my attention in the late nineties and early 00's, introducing me to instrumental hip hop and down tempo ambient music. i stumbled across most of this stuff back in the early days of file sharing, when napster (RIP) ruled the roost, sitting for hours on end, downloading single tracks on my 56k modem... i can remember the discoveries that made it all worth while though, dj shadow, coldcut, hexstatic, herbaliser to name a few, and as a result introducing me to great labels like mo' wax, ninja tune, warp and tru thoughts, my independent label education so to speak ;D

i have selected a few of these and artists and thrown them together for your listening pleasure, enjoy.

this month i have been listening to a mix of the oldies & newbies of ambient techno. i have selected a few of these geniuses and slung em together in a small mix, newer artists take the form of nathan fake & james holden, who runs the awesome boarder community label. the older and more established artists include orbital, aphex twin and a guy called gerald (not so ambient, but great old song from the nineties). if you have the time you should check out these other fine labels to discover similar artists: warp, bpitch control and kompakt (direct liks to these can be found on the right hand side of this blog under 'Independent labels')

skins series 3 mix

i have been following the new series of skins on E4 like a crazy thing, the whole series is well polished, the actors are great and the music is fantastic. i was not so into the first and second series but for some reason this time round i got well into it.
